The Advocate, the world’s leading source of LGBTQ+ news and information, today releases its latest issue featuring cover stars Will Ferrell and Harper Steele. In the issue, the comedy duo dives into their three decades of friendship as shared in the upcoming Netflix documentary Will & Harper. The special follows Ferrell and Steele on a heartfelt cross-country road trip as they grow closer while navigating Steele’s later-in-life transition.
The Advocate’s interview with Ferrell and Steele explores their dynamic and long-lasting friendship. They share their memories from throughout the years, all the way back to when they met on the set of Saturday Night Live, as well as Steele’s fears of how her transition might affect their friendship. The trip – filled with laughs and light-hearted jokes, as well as some more serious moments – ultimately strengthens their bond.
Ferrell on educating himself about his friend’s transition: “My advice would be to ask questions, no matter how stupid you think they may be. Sit back and listen to their story, their journey and try not to assume anything. It will all feel strange but it’s exciting to learn about your friend in a completely different way. I think it helps that Harper and I have known each other for 30 years and we really got to know each other through the language of comedy.”
